Washington D.C. – Following a letter sent by all ten Democratic senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee to committee Chairman Chuck Grassley in which the senators requested Grassley schedule a hearing to consider Ed Martin’s nomination for U.S. Attorney in Washington DC, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Thank you to Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats for demanding hearings on Ed Martin’s nomination. In the short time he has held the position in an acting capacity, he has abused the office to intimidate Americans who do not immediately toe Trump’s party line. That record should not be hidden from the public. Martin should not be allowed to advance to the Senate floor without having to answer questions in public, under oath, about his deeply disturbing record. We already know Trump wants to use the justice system to threaten and punish his political opponents. Ed Martin shows that the threat is real. The Senate must be certain that all federal prosecutors will work in the best interest of the people, not the whims of Donald Trump.”
