Washington D.C. – Following the historic first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“The presidential debate brought even more clarity to the choice facing American voters. Vice President Kamala Harris is focused on a future of promise and opportunity for all Americans. Donald Trump wallows in lies, conspiracy theories, and dehumanizing rhetoric that worsens our divisions. Vice President Harris demonstrated her readiness to lead our country forward with specific policy plans that support families and strengthen the economy. Trump offered Americans nothing but his rage and continued refusal to own up to his defeat in 2020. Vice President Harris affirmed her commitment to the freedom and dignity of the American people. Trump praised the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade and opened the door to brutal abortion bans. Vice President Harris vowed to defend democracy at home and abroad. Trump basked in the praise of a foreign autocrat and tried to undermine Americans’ faith in democracy. Vice President Kamala Harris is the obvious choice for the next president of the United States. This presidential race is tighter than it should be and our freedoms are on the line. In the next two months, we must work hard to engage and mobilize our communities on the issues that matter most in securing a better future for everyone. If we do that, we will win in November.”
