Washington D.C – In response to upcoming votes on H.R. 9495, People For President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“This bill will authorize Donald Trump to target nonprofits that he views as political enemies. Giving the Trump administration unilateral authority to suppress and punish these nonprofits would irreparably harm our democracy, our right to protest, and our freedom of speech. Threatening to remove tax-exempt status and arbitrarily labeling organizations as supporters of terror are the actions of an authoritarian regime, and we cannot allow this executive branch to have such easily abusable powers.
If this bill were to pass, news outlets, universities, civil liberties organizations and many more would be in jeopardy, all without the need for the government to provide any real reasoning or evidence against them. We’re calling on every member of the House to vote no on this legislation and tell President-elect Trump that we will not enable his attacks on his perceived political enemies.”
