WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following the news that Christopher Wray, the current F.B.I. director announced his planned resignation prior to Donald Trump’s inauguration, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“The news of FBI Director Wray’s planned resignation is disturbing. This is a time when we need committed public servants to set an example and stand strong against the coming onslaught.
“Congress gave FBI directors ten-year terms for times like this. The term spans multiple administrations to avoid politicization of the office. Congress made this reform in 1976, in the aftermath of Watergate.
“Trump and his supporters have been open about their plans to abuse power and go after his political opponents. And he intends to install Kash Patel as FBI director to accomplish that goal. Wray should have stood in their way. At the very least, Trump would have had to fire him to get his preferred candidate installed. Wray should not have done Trump’s work for him. He should reconsider his unfortunate decision.”
