Washington D.C. – Following President Biden’s announcement that he supports major reforms of the Supreme Court, as well as a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling granting presidents unprecedented immunity, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“President Biden made it clear that he would spend the remainder of his term working to make more progress for the American people, and he’s keeping his promise. Supreme Court reform is urgently needed and way overdue. We fully support the President’s proposal to establish term limits and an enforceable code of ethics to help break the Far Right’s stranglehold on the current Supreme Court. We also applaud the President for his support of a constitutional amendment to correct the Court’s dangerous ruling giving presidents extensive immunity from criminal prosecution. This Court’s attempt to put presidents above the law stands as one of the most extreme missteps it has ever taken, and we need an effective and permanent fix.”
