We’ve been compared to terrorists, called accessories to murder, and even blamed for 9/11.
Here at People For the American Way—or, as we’re also known, “People For the American Gay”—it isn’t out of the ordinary to learn from some of our conservative friends that we are “almost pure evil,” “child killers” or “a tool of the devil.”
As we mark Right Wing Watch’s 10th anniversary, we thought it would be fun to remember some of the best compliments that we’ve received from the Right.
Pat Robertson, the Religious Right leader and “700 Club” host, has said that Satan is behind what he claims are our lies about him, and once threatened to launch a “full-scale exposé” of the “nasty group” that keeps trying to “embarrass” him by quoting him verbatim.
We’re sorry to break it to Robertson, but it’s not us who are making him look bad. He might remember that time when his Christian Broadcasting Network was so humiliated by his assertion that gay people deliberately transmit HIV to strangers with special rings that the network attempted to scrub the comment from a recording of his program. When we posted a video of Robertson’s full remarks, the network tried multiple times to take it down. (They failed; you can watch it here.)
We also found a fan in Alex Jones.
The conspiracy theory fanatic learned the truth about our true motive for monitoring right-wing media, telling viewers that we are “pieces of crap” bent on acquiring secret “life-extension technology” and a place in the “off-world colonies.”
Anti-choice leader Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue, delivered a very nice message to us a few years ago: “I will testify against you on the Day of Judgment. My words that you have recorded will testify against you on the Day of Judgment because you have blood on your hands.”
But we don’t mind taking flak. If far-right activists are calling us “cyberstalkers” and Nazis, we must be doing something right.
