Washington D.C. – In response to Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) introducing a resolution in the House to prohibit lawmakers from using the bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity, her assertion that these bills “absolutely” target trans people, and House Speaker Mike Johnson’s announcement that single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House office buildings are reserved for individuals of the corresponding “biological sex,” People For President Svante Myrick released the following statement:

“This bill, and others like it, are by Representative Mace’s own admission designed to discriminate. Bathroom bills and policies have no foundation in science, society, or basic human decency. They do not protect anyone. Instead, they single out an already marginalized group for further misinformation, mistrust, and discrimination.

“As we enter an era that will be frightening and traumatic for many Americans, we must be willing to call out hate and prejudice when we see them, and we must work to defend marginalized people from oppression – not enshrine oppression into the law.

“We’re calling on every member of the House to reject these attempts at legislating hate and allow trans people both in and out of government to live their lives with peace and dignity.”
