Washington D.C. - People For the American Way today announced seven endorsements for U.S. Senate as part of its 2024 “Defend the Senate” slate. The announcement comes as People For highlights the importance of maintaining Democratic control of the Senate as a bulwark against antidemocratic forces and to advance an agenda of rights and freedoms for all. The Senate will be instrumental in, among other things, confirming fair-minded federal judges; strengthening and protecting voting rights; repairing damage to reproductive rights and ensuring reproductive freedom; and ensuring a binding code of ethics for the Supreme Court.
People For President Svante Myrick and People For National Field Director Markus Batchelor released the following statements:
“The stakes of this election couldn’t be higher,” said Myrick. “Facing unprecedented threats from Donald Trump and his MAGA agenda, we need to secure a progressive majority and retain control of the Senate for the future of our democracy. These candidates represent the progressive vision we need to move this country forward.”
“Our goals in 2024 are clear,” said Batchelor. “Keeping Donald Trump out of the White House, building a progressive majority in the House and Senate, and defending our democracy in state and local elections. With strategic use of our resources, we’re ready to make a tremendous impact up and down the ballot and achieve our goals for the Senate and beyond.”
The slate of candidates is spread across key target states where the fights for fair courts and protection of civil liberties are focused.
People For Endorsees
Rep. Ruben Gallego (D), Arizona
“I’m so thankful to People For the American Way for their endorsement,” said Rep. Gallego. “As a Marine combat veteran and proud Arizonan, it has been an honor to fight for everyday families in Congress. I look forward to continuing my work to cut costs, defend abortion rights, and protect our democracy in the U.S. Senate alongside the many People For members in Arizona as we build a better future for our children."
“The stakes in this contest are incredibly high,” said Svante Myrick. “Ruben Gallego is the right candidate to take on the far-right, election-denying Kari Lake and provide real representation for Arizonans in the Senate. We are proud to support him.”
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D), Ohio
“Politics is about whose side you are on, and I have always been on the side of Ohioans — no matter who you are, where you live, or what kind of work you do,” said Senator Sherrod Brown. “From supporting a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions to protecting the right to vote, I will continue fighting alongside People For the American Way to protect our democracy.”
“Sherrod Brown’s record in the Senate shows he’s a tireless advocate for Ohio’s working families,” said Svante Myrick. “This seat is incredibly important as we work to strengthen the Senate as a bulwark against threats to our democracy. I’m confident Sherrod will be reelected by the Ohioans he has served so well.”
Sen. Bob Casey (D), Pennsylvania
“Bob Casey has been an advocate, a fighter, and a friend in the Senate,” said Svante Myrick. “His reelection will be a key victory that will continue our forward momentum and help our country sustain the progress we’ve seen over the last four years.”
Angela Alsobrooks (D), Maryland
“I’m grateful to People For the American Way for their endorsement, and I appreciate the grassroots support of People For the American Way’s Maryland members in this election,” said Angela Alsobrooks. “I’m proud to be fighting for Maryland and for our country.”
“From investing in education to expanding access to health care, Angela Alsobrooks has a proven track record of progressive action that improves real people’s lives,” said Svante Myrick. “Angela is the right candidate for this critical Senate seat.”
Sen. Tim Kaine (D), Virginia
“A huge thank-you to People For the American Way for their endorsement,” said Sen. Kaine. “As we all work to bring people together and help each other in our communities, I’m thankful for organizations like People For that represent our shared values of justice and opportunity for all.”
“Tim has been dedicated to progressive values from his time as a civil rights lawyer to his work in the Senate,” said Svante Myrick. “In this competitive environment, Tim Kaine has the experience and ideals we need in the Senate, and we’re proud to endorse him.”
Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D), Wisconsin
“I’m incredibly thankful for People For the American Way,” said Sen. Baldwin. “Like People For, I’m fighting back against the special interests that only serve the wealthy and powerful. And together, we’ll win.”
“Tammy Baldwin has been a fighter since her first days in the House to becoming the first openly LGBTQ+ Senator in history,” said Svante Myrick. “She’s shown that her grassroots, Wisconsin values are her North Star, and Wisconsinites are well served by her representation and leadership.”
Rep. Colin Allred (D), Texas
“We are building a big, diverse coalition to finally give Texas the leadership they need in the U.S. Senate,” said Congressman Colin Allred. “I am excited to work alongside People for the American Way to win because Texas cannot afford six more years of Ted Cruz.”
“Ted Cruz has been a disaster in the Senate, and there’s no one better suited for the fight to defeat him than Colin Allred,” said Svante Myrick. “Ted Cruz never delivers for Texans because he is too busy podcasting and dividing Americans over the latest culture war. Colin has the honesty, the pragmatism, and the work ethic to represent Texans in the U.S. Senate.”
