On Sunday, Jerry Falwell mentioned to his congregation and television audience that Sen. George Allen (R-Virginia) will attend in his Celebrate America Extravaganza on July 2 to mark the 50th anniversary of Thomas Road Baptist Church and the opening of the church’s new “one million-square-foot worship, educational and recreational center” in Lynchburg, Virginia. Allen, a 2008 presidential contender, is currently campaigning for re-election.
Although Falwell’s new 6,000 seat church will be one of the largest in the country, that’s just the beginning of “Liberty Mountain.” Future plans may include a “multi-use recreational complex including a 100-acre lake, a golf course, a snow ski slope, a horse center, riding trails and a water park.”
