In his testimony before Congress today, Kyle Sampson, the former chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, disputed his former boss’s claim that Gonzales wasn’t involved in the firing of eight US Attorneys forced out of their jobs in late 2006. Sampson testified that Gonzales had been aware of plans as far back as early 2005, and said of Gonzales’s denial, "I don't think it's entirely accurate.” According to the Washington Post, Sampson said, “The decision makers in this case were the attorney general and the counsel to the president.”
People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas issued the following response:
“Kyle Sampson’s testimony shows us that Alberto Gonzales isn’t being honest with the American people. Our nation places great trust in the Attorney General, and time and time again he’s abused that trust. Now even his own chief of staff is telling us that he hasn’t been honest about his role in the US Attorney scandal. Alberto Gonzales has lost the confidence of the American people, and it’s time for him to be replaced.”
