Washington, D.C.—In response to Attorney General William Barr’s letter characterizing the contents of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his investigation into Russian election interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:
“The Trump administration must provide Congress and the American people with the full report and findings from Robert Mueller’s investigation. The House of Representatives voted unanimously to demand that level of transparency, and it’s supported overwhelmingly by the American public. A summarizing statement from an attorney general demonstrably hostile to the special counsel investigation—written without consulting Mueller—is not sufficient in any way, especially when the administration’s public messaging about the report exonerating Trump seems to directly contradict the text of Barr’s letter. The only way to get the truth is for Congress and the public to see the report and its underlying findings.
“Mueller’s investigation has resulted thus far in five people sentenced to prison, one person convicted at trial, seven guilty pleas, charges filed against 37 people and entities, and 199 overall criminal counts. Clearly, corruption and criminality swirl around this president. We need the full details of the investigation to understand the full scope of what Mueller uncovered as Congress continues its necessary investigations into this administration's corruption, abuse of power, and obstruction of justice.
“Mueller’s investigation was just one piece of the overall effort needed to hold this administration accountable. That work must continue.”
