Washington, D.C.— People For the American Way is saddened to learn of the death of activist and philanthropist Henry van Ameringen.

"Henry van Ameringen was a beloved friend and benefactor of People For the American Way and we are saddened by his loss," said People For the American Way President Ben Jealous. "I also had the honor of working with Henry when I served as president of the NAACP, when we partnered in the fight for marriage equality. He leaves a legacy as a trailblazer for LGBTQ rights and as a philanthropist whose generosity improved the lives of millions of people. We mourn his loss and will always be deeply grateful for his life."

"Henry van Ameringen was one of the early heroes in the fight for LGBTQ equality and the fight against the scourge of HIV/AIDS ," said Michael Keegan, board member of People For the American Way and past president of the organization. "Henry was an entrepreneurial philanthropist, often giving early support to new ideas when that support is the most important, and staying with them consistently. Henry was a supporter early on of People For the American Way Foundation's Young Elected Officials program, demonstrating his commitment to elevating young, diverse progressives in government. I loved working with him and knowing him. Many movements and causes have lost an important ally and friend and I will truly miss his frankness and brilliant sense of humor."
