WASHINGTON – Senator Patrick Leahy announced today that the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing June 3 on a constitutional amendment to restore the ability of Congress and the states to regulate the raising and spending of money on elections. “Today’s announcement is an important step forward in the movement to reclaim our democracy from wealthy special interests. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in McCutcheon v. FEC, which allowed even more money to flood our elections, this work is more urgent than ever.
“Passing a constitutional amendment is never an easy process – nor should it be. But this is a moment in our nation’s history where “we the people” must act to protect the integrity of our democracy. We applaud Sen. Leahy, Sen. Reid, and Sen. Udall on their leadership in moving this critical process forward.”
