As the Senate moves towards votes on three of Trump’s extreme nominees to the federal bench, Steve Grasz, Don Willett and James Ho, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:

“As today’s vile tweet about Senator Gillibrand made clear, Donald Trump and his administration are utterly out of control. Yet Republicans, even Republicans who have made preening statements about their independence, continue to rubber stamp his nominees to lifetime seats on the federal bench.

“This week the Senate will consider a nominee the American Bar Association rated unanimously unqualified because of doubts that he can put aside his anti-choice ideology and animus towards LGBTQ people on the bench, a nominee who has raised grave doubts about his willingness to check radical executive overreach, and a nominee who has made clear that he wants to repeal the New Deal. Yet Republicans are obediently lining up to support them.

“No one should get a free pass on judicial nominees. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake and others are talking a very good game, but they don’t deserve any credit for being independent minded if they continue to aid and abet Donald Trump’s efforts to pack the federal judiciary with extremists. It’s a scandal in slow motion, and they shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it.”
