In response to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to advance the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:

“Today, despite not having heard from key witnesses or having access to a full independent investigation of the allegations made by Dr. Blasey Ford or the other women who have spoken out about this nominee’s behavior, the Senate Judiciary Committee nonetheless voted to advance Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Senate floor. It is important that Senator Flake indicated that while he voted for this nomination in committee, he would not support final confirmation without a full independent investigation. It’s also deeply disappointing that the committee as a whole chose to move this nomination on to the Senate floor without having access to such an investigation. At the very least, Senator McConnell should delay the vote to accommodate Senator Flake’s request. Brett Kavanaugh has made it painfully obvious that he doesn’t have the character or the temperament appropriate for a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court.

“Senator Grassley and his allies on the committee made their contempt for women and sexual assault survivors perfectly clear. Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination should be withdrawn. If it isn’t, Republicans and Democrats alike should make clear that the voices of women matter by rejecting his nomination.”
