In response to the bipartisan Senate Judiciary Committee vote in support of legislation designed to protect the investigation being led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:
“Today’s vote is an important step forward in putting legislation in place to ensure that the Mueller investigation can go forward without interference. It is also an important bipartisan statement in support of the rule of law. Americans need to have confidence that no one, not even the President of the United States, is above the law. Given the President’s behavior and his comments as recently as this morning, it’s clear that we need guarantees to that effect written into statute. That’s what this legislation would do.
“Those who have worked hard to support this legislation should be gratified to see the broad bipartisan support it received. That’s a testament to the grassroots actions that have made clear we expect Congress to stand up for our constitution. Now it’s up to Senator McConnell and leaders in the House to make clear that they too are able to put their oath of office and commitment to equal justice above their fealty to this President. This legislation is urgently needed. It should be passed by both chambers of congress as swiftly as possible.”
