In response to President Bush’s renomination of several controversial judicial nominees returned by the Senate earlier this year, People For the American Way Legal Director Elliot Mincberg released the following statement:
“It’s sad but not surprising. President Bush has consistently picked confrontation over consultation and compromise when it comes to federal judges. With his right-wing base still smarting from an Election Day drubbing, Bush has tossed them an ideological bone. But there’s not much meat on it. Nobody expects these nominees to be confirmed in this lame duck Congress. The real decision for President Bush will come in January when the new Congress is sworn in. Will he nominate more moderate judges who can win broad bipartisan support, or will he continue to treat the federal courts, and Americans’ legal protections, as fodder for the far right?”
