In response to Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, including his misleading statements on emails stolen from Committee Democrats between 2001 and 2003 and his work to confirm William Pryor as a Circuit Court judge, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:

“The simple truth is that Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony before the Judiciary Committee doesn’t fit the facts. And now that we have access to a limited portion of his record from the White House, we can see that his testimony during his DC Circuit confirmation hearings didn’t either. This is a serious issue under any circumstance, and it’s especially serious given that Kavanaugh is being considered for a lifetime seat on the nation’s highest court. The stakes are simply too high for Congress to brush this aside. The integrity of our government is on the line.

“At this point, it’s clear that the Department of Justice needs to formally investigate Kavanaugh’s statements to see whether any laws were broken. And it’s equally clear that this rushed, corrupt process needs to be halted until Senators and the public alike have access to all the appropriate documents not just to evaluate whether Kavanaugh lied to Congress but whether he’s fit for a lifetime seat on the federal courts.

“The Supreme Court is too important to rush the confirmation process forward to meet a political schedule, and the confirmation process is too important to ignore the possibility that a nominee may have lied to the Senate. Enough is enough. This process has got to be halted immediately.”
