In response to today’s Senate Judiciary Committee meeting at which the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh was, as Republicans planned, held over for one week, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement.

“If anyone needed more evidence that Republicans are hell bent on confirming Brett Kavanaugh no matter what the cost to the instiution of the Senate and the harm to the American people, today’s circus certainly provided it. Senator Grassley, with the support of Republican members of the committee, didn’t just vote against Democratic moves to get critical documents and call important witnesses that would shed more light on Kavanaugh’s record, he sideswiped committee rules in order to do it.

“It’s clear that this process is a political power play dressed up like a confirmation process. Senator McConnell wants to confirm Brett Kavanaugh by any means necessary. They don’t care that he’s shown himself to be completely untrustworthy: they just want a win. And as always it’s ordinary Americans—women who need access to reproductive healthcare, individuals with preexisting conditions, workers who want a fair shot on the job and citizens who want to cast a vote and have it count—who will pay the price.”
