Washington, D.C. — In response to the news that the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance the nomination of Stephen Schwartz to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, People For the American Way Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:
“Stephen Schwartz is totally wrong for any position on the federal bench. He is a Trump nominee with an extremely disturbing record on voting rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration and reproductive freedom. Furthermore, he has condemned social safety net programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, describing those and other critical programs as ‘harmful’ and ‘well beyond the limits of reasonable altruism.’ It’s outrageous that Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are pushing extreme judicial nominees while Americans are struggling through a national health and economic crisis. Senators must oppose the nomination of Schwartz and prioritize relief, health and safety for the millions of people suffering through the impact of this pandemic.”
