WASHINGTON, D.C.— In response to President Trump’s expansion of his Muslim travel ban to six African nations (Nigeria, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Libya), which took effect this morning, People For the American Way Political Director Lizet Ocampo released the following statement:

“Like the existing Muslim ban, this expansion of the ban uses religious bigotry to target people for discrimination, strips people of their dignity and perpetuates harmful, racist stereotypes for Black and Brown people from African and Middle Eastern countries. In 2020, we cannot allow Trump to continue promoting and enacting anti-Black, anti-Brown, xenophobic policies by claiming ‘national security.’ This election year, we have a critical opportunity to stand up for what’s right by voting for a president who will restore the values we aspire to – freedom, equality, opportunity and justice – and end all policies that discriminate based religious background, country of origin, or skin color. We continue to support the call for Congress to pass the NO BAN Act and stop the Muslim ban now.”
