Washington, D.C.—In response to the news about Republican Georgia Sen. David Perdue and Sen. Kelly Loeffler calling for the resignation of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, also Republican, President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“It is utter hypocrisy that Georgia’s Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler would make this frivolous call for the resignation of the Secretary of State simply because, as all the votes are counted, the outcome is not in their favor. The hypocrisy is particularly heightened when neither once questioned the outcome of the 2018 Georgia elections, which was rife with voter suppression that resulted in long lines in minority communities and thousands of Georgians being purged from the voter rolls by the then Secretary of State and current Governor Brian Kemp. Neither of Georgia’s senators has been a champion for restoration of the Voting Rights Act, which is sorely needed,  yet both continue to be missing in action.

Voting is our voice and the American people sent a resounding message when they overwhelmingly chose President-elect Joe Biden as our nation’s next leader.  Free and fair elections are a core value of our democracy and we will not let a desperate Donald Trump, power hungry senators in Georgia and others continue with voter suppression tactics intended to silence the voices of millions of Americans who rejected the last four years of divisive, racist policies. Perdue and Loeffler are failing Georgians by putting politics ahead of every vote being counted."
