WASHINGTON, D.C.— With the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision that upholds the rights of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients earlier today, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous and Political Director Lizet Ocampo released the following statements:
“At least for now, today’s ruling on DACA ends the hellish uncertainty that Donald Trump forced on hundreds of thousands of young people in this country. It also shows us how much elections matter, because the two Trump justices – Gorsuch and Kavanaugh – are on the wrong side of this ruling and the wrong side of history. This could easily have gone the other way. While an immediate threat is removed, we still need to ensure DREAMers are protected in the future. We have to keep that in mind in November when we vote for president and for senators," said Jealous.
“DREAMers are Americans who have never known any other home. They are neighbors, members of our armed forces, and frontline workers like firefighters, health care workers and grocery store employees. We still need to do more to ensure that DREAMers’ status here is protected and ensured, and the onus must be on lawmakers to come up with a legislative solution to protect our immigrant families. But today, at least, we can breathe a sigh of relief,” said Ocampo.
