Washington, D.C.—People For the American Way today condemned the Trump Administration’s reported attempts to redefine the meaning of gender in strictly anatomical terms, a move that would strip civil rights protections from LGBTQ people. The New York Times reported on Sunday that this move would “essentially eradicate federal recognition of the estimated 1.4 million Americans” who identify as transgender.
“Trump wants to discriminate and attack people without consequences,” PFAW Executive Vice President Marge Baker said. “His administration wants to eliminate protections for LGBTQ people to appeal to his far-right base. It’s a sick, cynical attempt to bully a marginalized community and distract from his own failures as a leader. Americans must stand firm, and Congress should immediately assert itself against this disgraceful attempt at discrimination.”
