WASHINGTON, D.C.—People For the American Way released the following statement from PFAW President Michael Keegan in response to Judge Reed O’Connor’s ruling that the Affordable Care Act was unconstitutional:

“Friday’s ruling is the result of an extensive, coordinated attack by Republicans on healthcare protections for millions of Americans, including those with pre-existing conditions. The ruling comes in a lawsuit brought by a group of Republican state attorneys general based on changes made to the tax code in the GOP tax scam law passed earlier this year. This decision is not based on the law or the constitution—it’s a plainly political decision and a destructive attack on the healthcare of millions of Americans who rely on the protections the ACA provides.

“The claims made are so frivolous that three Justice Department attorneys refused to sign onto the Trump Administration brief in support of this lawsuit.  If somehow this ruling were to survive the appeals process in a Supreme Court stacked with narrow-minded elitists bent on advancing a political agenda that harms the American people, Republicans at every level of government would own the destruction of health coverage for tens of millions of Americans, including those with pre-existing conditions.

“The stakes involved in the upcoming 2020 elections could not be more apparent.”
