WASHINGTON, D.C.— Following today's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Cory Wilson to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, PFAW Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:
"Instead of using critical Senate time to address the coronavirus pandemic that is threatening lives and communities, Republican leadership today forced the Senate Judiciary Committee to take up the nomination of yet another anti-health care Trump judicial nominee, Cory Wilson. Wilson today tried to downplay his past comments calling the Affordable Care Act 'perverse' and 'illegitimate.' But as several Democrats on the committee pointed out, Wilson's extreme rhetoric on health care strongly indicates he would bring that hostility to the bench, as does Wilson's refusal today to recuse himself if an ACA-related case comes before the Fifth Circuit. That is unconscionable at a time when tens of thousands are dying in the United States from a pandemic that makes access to health care more vital than ever."
