President Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, today admitted in federal court that Trump instructed him to violate campaign finance law and that he acted in “coordination” with Trump to do so. People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement in response:
“These are stark admissions of wrongdoing. The fact that Michael Cohen’s sworn admissions came to light at the same time that President Trump’s campaign chairman was convicted of eight criminal counts only underscores the fact that it’s long past time to treat anything this president does as business-as-usual. Americans deserve to know the full truth about illegal activity in the Trump campaign and by Donald Trump himself. That means the Senate needs to make clear that it will not confirm his pick to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh.
“It’s no coincidence that President Trump nominated someone to the Supreme Court with a long career as a partisan operative, who says that the President should not be investigated while in office. This isn’t a normal confirmation process: it’s an effort by the President to shield himself from investigation and accountability for his actions, and the Senate shouldn’t be complicit in that attempt. No one of good conscience, regardless of party, can vote in favor of the President’s efforts to exempt himself from the principle that no one is above the law.”
