Washington, D.C.—People For the American Way Political Director Lizet Ocampo today condemned the Ron DeSantis campaign for hiding his health care positions three weeks before Election Day. A recent NBC News/Marist Florida poll showed both registered and likely voters in Florida considered health care the top issue, and it was a virtual tie for the top issue among Florida Latinos. DeSantis’ “Issues” page does not even mention the topic, and he has still not published a much-hyped health care plan.
Ocampo released the following statement on DeSantis’ health care failure:
“Ron DeSantis is trying to hide his health care positions because he knows Floridians will reject them. He wants to throw out protections for people with pre-existing conditions. He wants to cut Medicare and make people wait until they are 70 to get it. That’s how he voted in Congress. That’s how he’ll govern in Florida. That’s why he’s still trying to hide his positions three weeks out from Election Day—he knows they will cost him an election.”
Florida has one of the highest uninsured rates in the country. According to the most recent numbers available from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 2.4 million Floridians lack health insurance, including 778,000 Hispanics.
