In response to moves by Senate Republicans to schedule a hearing on the allegations of sexual assault raised by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:

“The allegations against Brett Kavanaugh are extremely serious and must be treated as such. As experts and others outside the Senate have stated, including at least one supporter of Judge Kavanaugh, there must be a full and impartial investigation of Brett Kavanaugh’s actions before a Senate hearing. Republicans can’t be allowed to treat this as business as usual, or to concoct a sham process to minimize or excuse Kavanaugh’s behavior.

“No one is entitled to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court. They’re certainly not entitled to a process rigged in their favor. The Senate has an obligation to ensure that any nominee meets the very highest standards—that means a through, bipartisan investigation conducted by professionals with experience concerning sexual violence must be completed before there is a new hearing.”
