WASHINGTON, D.C.— Following the introduction in the House of the 21st Century Courts Act (H.R. 6017), aimed at important reforms within the federal judiciary including a code of conduct for Supreme Court justices, People For the American Way Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:
"We applaud Judiciary Committee Chair Nadler, Courts Subcommittee Chair Johnson and Transparency Caucus Chair Quigley for putting the issue of judicial ethics and transparency front and center. At a time when the federal courts are under constant attack from Donald Trump, who wants only to bend them to his political will, it is more important than ever to reassure the public that courts are independent and judges are conducting themselves with honesty and integrity. This measure to ensure a code of conduct for the Supreme Court -- which currently does not have one -- and provide the public with more ways to obtain first-hand information about court proceedings will go a long way toward reestablishing confidence in our justice system."
