Washington, D.C. -- In response to developing news regarding the death of George Floyd and anti-black racism connected to his death, People For the American Way Board Chair Lara Bergthold, Chair of the People For the American Way Foundation Rev. Timothy McDonald, and People For the American Way President Michael Keegan released the following statement:
“People For the American Way and its affiliate People For the American Way Foundation fight right-wing extremism and work to build a democratic society that implements the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all.
“George Floyd’s killing is just the latest of far too many examples of institutionalized racism which continues to rob Black Americans of their dignity and lives and keeps America falling short of its promises and its potential. We will continue to mobilize and equip our activists and members of our leadership networks to defend fundamental rights, encourage civic participation, and dismantle systemic barriers to equitable opportunity. Every time a Black American is threatened or killed because of the color of their skin we say Enough. We are committed to ensuring that someday Enough will mean The End.
“We deserve leaders who are committed to the values of freedom, fairness and equity, not politicians who undermine accountability, restrict access to voting, and inflame our divisions for short-term political gain.”
