Washington D.C. – Following today’s action by the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena Leonard Leo and Harlan Crow as part of an ongoing investigation of Supreme Court ethics, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“We overwhelmingly endorse the Judiciary Committee’s decision to subpoena both Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo. It’s way past time to get these two under oath and on the record about their outsized and wholly inappropriate influence over conservative members of our Supreme Court. The Court’s own belated decision to come up with a code of ethics, which lacks an enforcement mechanism, doesn’t change that. We applaud Judiciary Committee Chair Durbin, Senator Whitehouse, and all members of the Committee majority for their diligence in pursuing these subpoenas, and look forward to the committee shedding light on how billionaires have been buying our courts.”
