Washington, DC—Following today’s announcement by a local North Carolina district attorney that officers involved in the fatal shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. will not be charged, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“Once again, we are experiencing a tragic failure of our system to provide justice and accountability in a deadly police shooting of a Black man. Andrew Brown was shot in the back of the head. The decision not to charge officers in this execution-style killing is deeply disturbing, as is the continual failure of authorities to release all the video of the incident. This has to stop. There has got to be real accountability and also a reimagining of our public safety systems from the ground up, if we ever want to stamp out the violence, racism and authoritarianism polluting these institutions. Our hearts go out to the Brown family and we strongly support them in their demand for justice and for all the evidence surrounding this killing to come to light.”
