Washington, D.C. - Following the reintroduction in the U.S. House of H.J. Res. 1, the Democracy for All Amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court’s disastrous ruling in the Citizens United case 11 years ago today, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
"We wholeheartedly applaud Reps. Deutch, McGovern, Raskin and Katko for prioritizing the urgency of getting big money out of politics by reintroducing the Democracy for All Amendment. This moment of renewal and reset with a new administration is the right time to continue building momentum to finally do away with the horrendous legacy of Citizens United and other related rulings, which have opened the floodgates to billions of special-interest dollars pouring into our elections. This common-sense proposed amendment to the United States Constitution would bring an end to the overwhelming political dominance of ultra-wealthy individuals and corporations, so that our elected representatives can effectively represent the people they serve. Support for an amendment to get big money out of politics is gaining needed traction among states across the country that are ready to ratify and make it a reality; it’s time for Congress to lead and contribute its unequivocal support as well.”
