Washington, D.C. – Following news of the passing of civil rights icon Rev. William Lawson, founder of Houston’s Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“We've lost another hero from the golden age of our country’s civil rights movement. Rev. William Lawson was an early ally of Dr. King and one of the brave crusaders for racial and social justice on whose shoulders we stand today. We owe him our deepest gratitude and will be forever thankful for his life and work. Our hearts are with his family, and we wish them peace in the knowledge of our lasting love and admiration.”
