Washington, DC—On this first anniversary of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Our hearts go out to the family of George Floyd, who was brutally murdered one year ago today. We know that the Floyd family’s strong faith comforts them, and we hope the conviction of their loved one’s killer provides some measure of accountability, even as they continue to grieve.

“This country saw an outpouring of outrage over police violence in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and today we are experiencing mixed feelings and mixed results. While some communities have taken bold steps to reimagine public safety and address systemic police violence, the killings have continued. While we truly believe the hearts and minds of an entire nation were opened by George Floyd’s death and the evidence of brutal killings of Black Americans, there is still so much work to do. Congress needs to pass a robust justice in policing act to honor George Floyd. This should be a day of recommitment to the goals we set for ourselves: to change public safety in this country so no more families have to suffer the pain that the Floyd family is suffering. George Floyd’s memory should strengthen our resolve today and every day.”
