Washington D.C. – Following the Senate’s adjournment for its August break, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“The White House, Leader Schumer, the Senate Judiciary Committee under Senator Durbin’s leadership, and individual senators can be rightfully proud of their incredible work in nominating and confirming so many outstanding judicial nominees so far. The results are historic: a bench with greater professional and demographic diversity than we have ever seen, and judges with sincere commitments to civil rights and lived experiences that inform their every decision. Two-thirds of Biden judges are women, two-thirds are people of color, and there are record numbers of civil rights lawyers and former public defenders confirmed to the bench There have been many historic ‘firsts’; not just the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, but many who are the first person from an underrepresented community on their respective benches.
“At the same time, there are still a number of judicial vacancies to fill. When the Senate returns in September it will be critically important to prioritize confirmations, while the White House must prioritize nominations for every remaining vacancy. Time is of the essence; it will only get harder to do this next year as the election approaches. We’re confident that the Senate and White House can succeed in this mission and continue to nominate and confirm judges who will defend the rights of all of us, not just the wealthy and powerful.”
