Washington, DC – As we begin the annual celebration of Black History Month, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:

“As we celebrate important strides for Black Americans during this Black History Month, there is overwhelming evidence of just how far we still have to go. The murder of Tyre Nichols is a devastating reminder that Black Americans continue to face violence and systemic racism. Meanwhile, Black History itself is under attack in our schools, most recently in Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis and the College Board should be ashamed of themselves for gutting the AP Black History curriculum. And make no mistake; these events are related – because whenever education is stifled, oppression will bloom. Remember, Black History is American History. Suppressing it hurts all of us and robs students of their vital freedom to learn.”
