Washington D.C. -- Following news that Florida education officials approved new standards for teaching African American history that downplay the true history of our nation, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“We strongly object to these repeated attacks on the freedom to learn. Censorship of books and dilution of history are tools of fascist and authoritarian regimes and are antithetical to the American Way. We are especially concerned about the Right’s attempts to water down the truth of our shared history and its impact on Black Americans. This is a disservice to students who deserve a well-rounded education and to a nation that relies on a well-educated citizenry to sustain our democracy and our competitiveness on the world stage.”
