Washington D.C. – Following today’s divided Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and Students for Fair Admissions v. UNC, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Today the far-right wing of the Supreme Court delivered what ultraconservatives have sought for decades: a deeply damaging repudiation of 40 years of precedent on affirmative action. The Court’s ruling harms not only students of color but entire student bodies that will inevitably become less diverse and less inclusive of the rich variety of perspectives and experiences that university campuses strive to offer. As damaging as this will be, it may be only the beginning of harm to promote diversity and justice for people of color and women in other contexts. Cases that challenge these principles are already working their way through lower courts. Today’s decision makes it even more clear how critically important lower courts are and will be in shaping justice for all, and how vital it is for fair-minded judicial nominees to be confirmed to the many vacancies that exist on those courts now.”
