WASHINGTON, DC – Early voting is underway in Georgia despite attempts to delay the vote. Already, more than 180,000 Georgians have cast ballots in this crucial runoff election between Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker. In response to the start of early voting, People For the American Way’s incoming President and CEO Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“This runoff election is Georgians’ final opportunity to determine who will represent them in the U.S. Senate for the next six years. In a state with a history of voter suppression still plaguing Black voters today, it’s essential to be counted, both to ensure that all Georgians are fairly represented and to strike back against those who would deny Black voters their voice.
“As an organization with a mission to fight for justice, equality, fairness and freedom, we want to encourage greater participation of Black male voters in Georgia, a vital constituency that still does not vote in the high percentages that Black women do. We will equip voters with the tools to get to the polls against a tide of misinformation about voter ID laws, mail-in voting, early voting, and Election Day voting. During current early voting and throughout this vital run-off election, we stand with Black voters and all voters in Georgia.”
To support its mission to encourage Black men to vote, People For has extended its nonpartisan, multi-platform “Defend the Black Vote” campaign. From now until the conclusion of the Georgia Senate runoff election, People For is working to mobilize Black male voters between 18-60, encourage them to vote, and give them important information about voting laws and polling places. Early voting began statewide on November 26 and Election Day is on December 6.
