WASHINGTON, DC — Ahead of next week’s confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman ever nominated to the Supreme Court, People For the American Way announced its latest video in the #HerFightOurFight campaign to celebrate Judge Jackson and to highlight her outstanding legal credentials, deep personal commitment to civil and human rights, and stellar record upholding laws that protect people with disabilities and marginalized communities.

The new video, which features ASL signing by Richard Ray, ADA Technology Access Coordinator for the City of Los Angeles, recounts the story of Judge Jackson’s compassionate ruling in the case of William Pierce, a deaf man who was denied medical care, sign language interpreters, and access to programs within the DC prison system as he struggled to communicate with officers and was instead placed in solitary confinement.

“Judge Jackson studied the case thoroughly. She wanted to ensure that inmates who are deaf and hard of hearing, as well as individuals who are deaf and blind, have full and meaningful access to prison programs and services,” signed Ray.

“Ketanji Brown Jackson has an impressive career defending equal justice under law,” said President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous. “Judge Jackson is exceptionally qualified and that’s why we are fighting for her and supporting her confirmation through this multiplatform effort centered around videos in support of Biden’s women of color nominees.”

“In this historic and joyous moment, faith leaders and so many others who care for equal justice are celebrating and supporting extraordinary women like Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson who have shown up to protect the civil and human rights of people from all walks of life,” said Reverend Leslie Watson Wilson, national director of African American Religious Affairs at People For the American Way.

Prior to this announcement, People For released a video supporting Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson narrated by Wilson and viewed on Twitter and Facebook by nearly 50,000 viewers.

The #HerFightOurFight campaign focuses on securing the Senate confirmations of highly qualified women of color nominated for key posts within the Biden administration who are facing racist and sexist attacks from the Far Right.
