Washington, D.C. - Following House passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act was first passed by the House last year, then died in Mitch McConnell's Senate. It is frustrating that it is taking so long to take even this first step toward ending some of the most brutal aspects of policing in this country after the tragic death of Mr. Floyd, and yet we welcome tonight's passage of the reintroduced bill by the House. This legislation is about reimagining public safety for all of us. It makes important inroads toward ending police violence, qualified immunity and systemic racism in policing. It addresses the failure to bring real accountability to police departments. There is still a long way to go to change the way public safety is provided in this country. But the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act breaks new ground on this front, and now the Senate too must pass it."
