Washington D.C. – Following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Alexander v. South Carolina Conference of the NAACP, in which the Court upheld racially gerrymandered voting districts created by South Carolina Republican legislators, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Today the Supreme Court issued a ruling that will make it easier to suppress the Black vote in elections. It did this with a majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, who on two occasions at his home displayed flags that are symbols closely associated with election-denying insurrectionists and White Christian Nationalists. This is a bad decision from a Court whose right-wing justices’ flagrant partisanship and ethical lapses are mind-boggling. Voters will remember in November who put the right-wing majority on this Court, and how much elections matter when it comes to who sits on our courts and whether they uphold or undermine our rights.”
