Washington, DC—Following today’s Senate confirmation of Kristen Clarke as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“Kristen Clarke’s confirmation as head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division is a great moment in our history, made even more meaningful because it is falling on the first anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. Kristen is not only the first woman of color to lead the division, as an attorney and activist she has carved out a truly exceptional record as a lifelong champion for civil rights. She will bring this dedication to the Justice Department, where there is so much work to do to restore a focus on civil rights so we can prevent grave injustices like those perpetrated against George Floyd and too many others. We are deeply gratified to see this day and look forward to the great work Kristen Clarke will do for our country.”
