Washington, D.C. - Following today's vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee that will advance the nomination of Vanita Gupta for Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“We applaud the Judiciary Committee for advancing Vanita Gupta's nomination to the Justice Department, and we urge the full Senate to confirm her swiftly. There is no one more dedicated to the cause of justice and civil rights than Vanita. She will be a tremendous asset to a Justice Department that has lost its way in the last four years. Although it has been disturbing to see the far-right attacks on Vanita, including at today's committee meeting, these assaults are sadly what we have come to expect from the right wing when women of color are nominated by this administration. We know Vanita Gupta will always fight for us and our rights, and that's why we are fighting for her confirmation and will continue to have her back when she joins the Justice Department."
