Washington, D.C. - Following today’s procedural vote in the Senate to begin debate on the For the People Act, which Republicans blocked with a filibuster, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
"Today’s vote on the For the People Act is an important step forward for the American people as Senate Democrats united in favor of voting rights and strengthening our democracy, even as Republicans once again acted as obstructionists. We are confident that we are on a path to victory with voting rights legislation because the White House and Democratic caucus share a strong commitment to it, and because the American people overwhelmingly favor it. We all know inaction is not an option in the face of our country’s voting rights emergency. We will continue to fight for the For the People Act and to call on our national leadership to step up and fulfill their duty to protect our constitutional rights when they are under assault, as it has done in decade after decade.”
