Washington, DC — In advance of President Joe Biden’s national address to the nation this evening about protecting America’s democracy, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“This midterm election, the future of our democracy is at stake.  As we prepare for President Biden’s remarks today, we expect to hear him, clearly and emphatically, condemn the authoritarianism that is tearing our nation apart. No American, regardless of party affiliation, should tolerate baseless conspiracies regarding voter fraud, attacks on our children’s right to inclusive education, far-right rhetoric being used to spawn violence, or ongoing attempts to further suppress the will of the American people.

“These threats to our democracy are real, and all of us must do our part to make our voices heard and to secure a better future for this nation. Protecting a democracy means that we must continue pushing for progress in Washington and vote to elect individuals to national, state, and local offices who are willing to fight authoritarianism. In these final two months before Election Day, we must all work together to safeguard democracy and ensure that truth and justice prevail at the ballot box.”
