Washington, D.C. - Following House passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“House passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is a vital step forward in the fight to protect voting rights, and we applaud House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her leadership in moving it forward. Now the Senate has to act. We need passage of both the John Lewis Act and the For the People Act to restore voting rights and combat the racist voter suppression that is on the march in state legislatures across the country. This week we mobilized hundreds of activists to rally outside the White House to send this message to President Biden: now is the time to lead on voting rights, and use all the power of the presidency to eliminate the filibuster as an obstacle to getting these measures passed. There can be no more delays, and no more excuses.”
