WASHINGTON, DC — Following today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that Texas abortion care providers may pursue legal action against the state’s law banning abortion after six weeks, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker released the following statement:

“While we are encouraged that the Supreme Court upheld the rights of abortion care providers in Texas to take legal action to stop the state’s egregious ban, it is important to remember that devastating harm continues to be inflicted on millions of people in Texas. The Court’s action does nothing to stop the existing ban and the horrifying vigilante enforcement mechanism it imposes. The Court also rejected the U.S. Department of Justice challenge to the law. We are now forced to take part in a nightmarish waiting game as the right to control one’s own body is held hostage by a Far Right Supreme Court. We can only hope that in the end the Court does not rule to abolish this fundamental right.”
